Every year on November 11, the United States observes Veterans Day, a national holiday dedicated to honoring military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. While there are many ways to show appreciation for our veterans, one meaningful way is to turn to scripture for words of comfort, gratitude, and inspiration.
Thank God for Our Veterans
It is important to remember that being a veteran is a calling, a sacrifice, and a service that should be recognized and valued. The Bible encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances, including the bravery and dedication of our veterans. Psalms 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.” We should be thankful for the blessings of freedom and peace that our veterans have helped secure for us.
The Lord is Our Refuge and Strength
For veterans who have faced difficult and traumatic experiences in their service, it can be helpful to turn to the Bible for comfort and strength. Psalm 46:1 reminds us that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” This verse can be a powerful reminder that even in the midst of trials, we can find hope and peace in God’s presence and love.
Love Your Neighbor as Yourself
One way to honor our veterans is to show them love and kindness. In Matthew 22:39, Jesus instructs us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” This means finding ways to support and care for our veterans, whether it is through volunteering, donating to veteran organizations, or simply thanking them for their service.
Freedom in Christ
For veterans who may struggle with feelings of guilt or shame related to their service, it can be helpful to remember the freedom that we have in Christ. Galatians 5:1 says, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” This verse reminds us that through faith in Christ, we can find forgiveness, healing, and hope for the future.
Remembering Those Who Gave Their Lives
Finally, as we honor our veterans, it is important to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” We should remember and honor the sacrifice of those who have died in service, and pray for comfort and strength for their families and loved ones.
